Mercy Girl Named Youth Ambassador

By Jessica Gregg, Mercy High School

Sophomore Hillary Schenning lives in a house on the water, in a family where everyone owns a boat.

It is fitting then that this poised Mercy Girl was recently named the youth ambassador for the skipjack Nellie L. Byrd.

What is a skipjack? Hillary is ready with the answer: Unique to Maryland, a skipjack is a type of boat used in oyster dredging, she reports.

About 13 of these ships, including the Nellie L. Byrd, are still in operation during the fall and winter oyster seasons. But many students don’t know about this important piece of Chesapeake Bay history.

Hillary, a Hyde Park resident and princess for the Galloway Yacht Club, is charged with changing that. She will speak to student groups throughout the next year, educating them about the Nellie L. Byrd, which is used as a floating classroom by the Chesapeake Bay Memories Charities.

Although the ship is open to the public, Hillary also will travel around the area to speak. Her first talk will be at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary School, her alma mater. But her most auspicious talk is scheduled for the end of November when she will address leaders in Washington, D.C. who provided the grant money for the ambassador program.

In the meantime, she is honing her knowledge on the Chesapeake and will be working with a coach to prepare for the formal D.C. occasion. So far unfazed, Hillary says she is not scared of public speaking.

At Mercy, she performs with the Madrigal singers and has acted in Mercy’s productions of "King Lear" and "The Ugly Duckling." And in the spring, she plans to run for Queen of the Chesapeake, another ambassador-like position that will call upon her composure and confidence.
